Why Does Music Exist?

Why do you think music exists?

I suppose that is one of those questions you start thinking about when everything around you gets quiet. Maybe music exists because sometimes words simply are not enough.

Not enough?

hink about it. We have thousands of words to express what we feel, yet some emotions are almost impossible to put into words. Grief, happiness, peace, longing, nostalgia. You can talk about them for hours, but sometimes a single melody can express what words cannot.

So music is another kind of language?

Yes, maybe a language we understand without having to learn it. We respond to rhythm, tone and melody almost naturally. Even our own heartbeat has a rhythm. Perhaps that is one reason music feels so familiar to us.

That explains something. Sometimes a song starts playing and you immediately feel something, even before you really listen to the words.

Exactly. You do not always need to understand a song intellectually. Sometimes your body reacts first. A melody can slow you down, lift your mood, remind you of someone, or suddenly take you back to a moment you had almost forgotten.

So perhaps music connects memory and emotion.

I think it does. And maybe that is what makes it so special. Music can bring an old memory into the present without asking you to explain why you still remember it.

Perhaps it is. Not just finding a song, but finding something that fits the moment you are in. Sometimes you want energy. Sometimes you want to remember. Sometimes you simply want to sit quietly and listen.

And sometimes you do not want to think at all.

That might be one of music's greatest gifts. It gives the mind a little rest while still giving the heart something to hold on to.

A quiet bridge between thought and emotion.

Yes. I like that.

Now stop talking for a moment. Close your eyes, choose a melody from the player, and just listen. Or simply leave the music playing in the background while you work. You do not have to stop what you are doing. Let the melodies quietly accompany you while you work, think, read, or create.
