The Brain Says Stop, but the Heart Keeps Scrolling

Sometimes we pick up our phone just to look for a few minutes. One video leads to another, then a post, a comment, a piece of news, and before we know it, our finger keeps scrolling. At first, it feels entertaining, but after a while, we may not notice that our mind has started to feel tired.

Our brain is constantly waiting for something new. With every scroll, another image, another opinion, or another emotion appears in front of us. The brain tries to keep up with all these changes, while the heart quietly reacts to what we see. Curiosity, anger, sadness, jealousy, or a strange sense of uneasiness can appear without us even realizing it.

There is another side to this as well. The lives we see on social media are rarely someone's entire life. We see a beautiful holiday, a happy relationship, a successful career, or a carefully chosen photograph, and sometimes we start comparing it with our own life. The brain may know that it is only one selected moment, but the heart can still feel as if it were seeing the whole truth.

After a while, something rather strange happens. We put the phone down and feel as if we have done nothing, yet our mind feels full, our heart feels slightly restless, and it becomes difficult to concentrate on something else. Sometimes the reason we feel tired is not what we have done during the day, but how much movement our mind has been exposed to.

And this is where the brain and the heart can almost have a little conversation. The heart may say, “Just one more video.” The brain, already tired from everything it has seen, quietly answers, “I think that is enough.” The heart wants to keep scrolling, while the brain knows that a little silence might feel much better.

Fortunately, neither one has to win an argument. We can simply give both of them a break. Putting the phone aside, taking a short walk, looking out of the window, or listening to a melody we enjoy can slowly change the rhythm of the day.

Perhaps we do not have to fill every empty moment with something. Sometimes it is good to spend a few minutes without scrolling, without reading, and without trying to keep up with anything. The brain needs moments of silence, and the heart needs moments in which it does not have to hurry.

This is where music can become a quiet companion. When we choose a melody and simply listen, the brain does not have to keep searching for the next thing. The heart can stop jumping from one image to another and remain with a single feeling for a few peaceful minutes.

Maybe we can give ourselves that small gift today. Put the phone a little farther away, find a comfortable place, and play a melody you enjoy. The heart can relax, the brain can breathe, and for a few minutes, neither of them has to hurry anywhere. Just listen.
