A Love Story from Istanbul - Galata Tower and Maiden's Tower

Some love stories in Istanbul are not lived between people. They live quietly between two shores, beneath the same sky, carried by the wind and the waves of the Bosphorus. And sometimes, they live between two melodies.

This is the story of two instruments that have spent a lifetime waiting for each other.

At Maiden's Tower, a graceful woman in her seventies has been playing the kanun for many years. Her silver hair carries the quiet traces of a long life, and her gentle face seems to hold countless memories. Every evening, she sits by the Bosphorus, places her fingers on the strings, and lets the kanun speak for everything her heart has kept silent for so many years.

And beneath the shadow of Galata Tower, a distinguished man in his seventies has been playing the oud for many years. His silver hair and thoughtful face carry the quiet marks of a lifetime filled with memories. Every evening, he sits facing the Bosphorus, gently touching the strings of his oud, and sends his melody across the water, still listening for the one voice he has never stopped waiting to hear.

Between them is the Bosphorus.

And for all these years, music has been the only way they could reach each other. ❤️

Every evening, the first notes rise from the kanun at Maiden's Tower. Soft, delicate, and touched by a little sadness...

From the other side, the oud hears her melody and answers. It is almost as if it has been waiting all day just to hear her play.

The kanun asks, "Are you still there?"

The oud replies, "As long as you keep playing, I will be here."

And the music continues.

Ferries slowly pass between them. Seagulls drift across the evening sky. The lights of Istanbul begin to shimmer on the water, while their melodies cross the Bosphorus and find each other somewhere in the middle.

But the kanun cannot go to Galata.

And the oud cannot cross the water to Maiden's Tower.

So they wait.

Years pass.

Seasons change.

Istanbul changes.

But their melody remains.

Sometimes the kanun plays a brighter, happier tune.

The oud immediately understands and says, "You sound happy today."

The kanun answers, "Maybe because I heard you."

And sometimes the oud plays a slower, heavier melody.

The kanun listens carefully and asks, "Why are you so quiet tonight?"

The oud remains silent for a moment.

Then it softly replies, "Because being this close to you for so many years and still never meeting is not easy."

Perhaps that is what their love has always been.

They do not need to hold hands, walk together, or sit side by side.

It is a love of listening.

A love that has survived through thousands of evenings, countless melodies, and all the years that passed between them.

They have never touched.

They have never sat together.

Yet somehow, they have never truly been apart.

Perhaps some loves are not meant to end with a meeting.

Perhaps some loves simply remain in the distance, quietly reminding us that someone, somewhere, is still listening.

And through the nights of Istanbul, the kanun keeps playing.

The oud keeps answering.

Two old musicians, two instruments, two sides of the Bosphorus...

And one melody that has refused to disappear. ❤️

If you ever visit Istanbul, perhaps you will stand by the Bosphorus and listen carefully. You may see them there, one at Maiden's Tower and the other near Galata Tower, still playing the melody of a love story that never needed to be together to last.
